The next time someone tries to tell you Ronald Reagan was a great president, remind them that his drug policies are directly responsible for the fact that we incarcerate more of our citizens than any other country in the world.
The U.S. makes up 5% of the world’s population, and we make up about 25% of the world prison population. Think about that for a second.
So let me get this straight: Prison population jumps under Reagan by 500K, yet jumps under Clinton by a MILLION, and Reagan is the bad guy? OOOOOK? To be sure, Reagan was wrong to expand the ‘War on Drugs’ but, that is wholly different from claiming his entire Presidency was bad because of it.
Furthermore, you are acting as if statistics from the rest of the world are accurate and complete. To believe that there are more prisoners here than in China or India or Russia is the height of gullibility! Also, different countries have different methods for statistical collection. But keep believing simple charts explain everything…
